deadmau5‘s new album W:/2016ALBUM/ is an old schooler’s wet dream. We’ve got 8 bit themed tracks like 2448 and Cat Thruster that makes you want to punch a mushroom or smash a clay pot for a rupee.  Then there’s Three Pound Chicken Wing that could either take you back to the mid 90’s abandoned warehouse raver scene in London with it’s fading echoes and heavy beats.  But then we’ve got “Let’s Go” – Grabbitz: that vocally-focused track with enough classic 80’s style untz to get your groove going.

deadmau5 put enough video game style into W:/2016ALBUM/ to make Ernest Cline get sexy on himself. Even though this style is slightly different from past albums W:/2016ALBUM/ has a solid deadmau5 trance. One thing I thought fun about this album is how with each song you can try and identify a video game these sounds take you to.  For me Deus Ex Machina with it’s heart beat and industrial sounds feels very Half Life while the weird splattery noises in Glish remind me of Portal 2. deadmau5 was able to fit enough of his own style into some of these old school sounds to get you to hear them in an entirely new way.  I like this updated retro theme that W:/2016ALBUM/ has.  If you are into that sort of thing check it out.
