I’ve been trapped (pun all too much intended) in somewhat of a dubstep coma. It’s not that I don’t still enjoy the genre, it’s just that the vast majority of releases nowadays sound much too similar to one another. While a select group of producers (your Phiso’s, Samplifire’s, Oolacile’s, Krimer’s, & MurDa’s of the world) are starting to explore the real meaning of the term ‘sound design,’ there’s a significantly larger portion of musicians who would just rather replicate the “in” style at the moment. Brostep, riddim, chillstep, go ahead and pick your flavor of the month.

Then, almost out of nowhere, I woke up one day recently and everything was completely different. My calendar read 2016, but 50% of the new dubstep surfacing carried a distinct 2010/2011 kind of vibe. What the heck was going on here? Had my ears deceived me? Or had they just picked up on something that my other senses failed to detect? I had to conduct more research.

Among my findings, was this old school, turn-back-the-clock bass creation from Alex Sin & AFK. Backed by the big wigs over at Kairos Audio, “Watch Me (Get Higher)” immediately lifted my spirits to previously unfathomable levels. Trust me when I tell you that this banger is far from an anomaly. In fact, more and more tunes of this nature appear to be arriving by the boatload everyday. So tighten those chin straps, insert your mouth guards, and gear up for a wobble-filled workout of epic proportions.
