[BASS/ELECTRONIC] Bassnectar Hits Home Again With New Album ‘Unlimited’
Lorin Ashton, better known as Bassnectar, is constantly pushing boundaries when it comes to electronic music. Categorized by unusual drum patterns and glitchy bass lines, Lorin’s music has always challenged the status quo of electronic tunes. One thing that he does best is produce a lot of quality music. Fresh off the release of ‘Into the Sun,’ Bassnectar’s album ‘Unlimited’ will not disappoint – listen below while you read:
‘Unlimited’ begins with the ethereal and melodic tune, ‘Reaching Out’, clicking and beeping as more chords are strummed in the background. I get the sense that I am taking a journey through space when I listen to this track. As it builds more elements are incorporated; and then comes the bass. See, this is why Bassnectar is truly a genius at his craft. His sound is engineered not only to tell a story but it is fit to tell that story through powerful drum lines and absolutely random bass lines (that are not so random in the end). One minute you are floating through space and weightless, the next you come crashing back to earth to a buck wild frenzy of bass and hi-hats.
The album contains a multitude of other interesting tracks, each one completely different than the next. Not to be defined by genres, Lorin makes a point of creating music that does not stick to a certain BPM formula. Song’s like ‘TKO’ build to make you think you are about to hear a drum n’ bass style breakdown, only to give you something completely unexpected.
The album features a track with key collaborator G Jones, titled ‘Mind Tricks’, and it’s everything we’ve come to love about Bassnectar. Multiple BPM schemes, distorted hip-hop vocal samples, and absolutely grimy bass lines; it is quite the crunchy tune if I do say so myself. Once again, however, the track moves into the delicate melodies before you can blink an eye. The track ‘Unlimited Combinations’ is truly a beautifully placed, harmonious-yet-still-drum-heavy tune that has become so characteristic on Lorin’s recent albums.
‘Unlimited’ has something for everyone. The mastermind behind the Nectar’ project is going full speed ahead and doesn’t plan on quitting, or so it appears. The album makes you feel. It is powerful and it is sensitive; harmonious and ugly. It makes us feel funny, scared, inquisitive, and happy. Bassnectar’s music causes us to question the status quo. Much like life, this album is utterly unpredictable – a beautiful mess.
