At first blush “I Was Right” seems like a more muted affair than what we’ve come to expect from Black Light Dinner Party. Being purveyors of extroverted synth pop that usually brings my arid heart to high tide through their wondrously damn near naiveté towards love, their new single is surprisingly a markedly introverted journey. And I’m not complaining, especially when its emotional core is so reminiscent of the intoxicating, choleric sadness I’ve only otherwise encountered in Geographer’s “Original Sin” (one of my favorite tracks ever).

Plus, turning in on myself is what I do best with music. And “I Was Right” is all about swimming in the greys of the soul, letting them swirl around you like a fog–but knowing it’s about to come to an end. You could call this song a precursor to “Older Together” and “Gold Chain” in that where those tracks soak in synthy sunshine, “I Was Right” is about the moments the light first finds it way into your sombre spirit.

The synth work at the beginning stanza exudes an exquisite sadness that I just feel myself drowning in, but the subsequent choruses and stanzas lift me into an alternate realm. This is easily my favorite new track by BLDP (though they’ve certainly never made a bad song to date), and I thought nothing would ever top “Older Together” for me.

Follow Black Light Dinner Party on Soundcloud and look out for their debut LP (it’s been three years in the making, guys!) Sons and Lovers this September.
