A playlist about midnight mode walking through the city, looking back and seeing all the ghosts behind you, in perfect step. I didn’t notice they were wearing clothes of mine they nicked. They stole a little bit of my armour when we collided. But, fuck. All the fashions. All the years. They wear them to catch the corner of my eye, make missing you feel like running on the sword of our shitty behaviour. Phantom ghosts, still phantom limbs growing out of the places emotions used to grow. That one time our hearts stabbed shivs in each other for stripping, exposing the histories written on your skin. My clavicle throbs. No kill shot, that time. Tip o’ the hat for classy restraint or at the very least not wanting the tears I’d transplant to your eyes to ruin your suede couch. I draw my dagger too quick when you look to care.

I knew one or two nipped at my feet. To be expected (I am an asshole). The legacies of me build these battle wounds into anthropomorphic fuckwads torturing me. I deserve them. But all of these ghosts? No, they aren’t mine. Not this goddamn small army every time I run to safety across a crosswalk. And when the Charlie Hebdo attacks terrorized France their origin made sense. Lost in all the hullabaloo about liberté and (fuck yo) free speech, was humanistic tales of how we ‘other’.so.many.fucking.people and we wonder ‘why do they hate us?’ Divisions are deep in all these supposedly goddamn free societies. But I’ve been an immigrant many times now in my life, to cultures that rather’d not have me…have anyone. I face islamophobia square in the face. I’ve been called Shitty Bin Laden (oh so clever play on the Shi’ite sect), denied driver’s licenses because some lady at the DMV was terrified my name meant I wanted to setup another 9/11, denied countless jobs (never got in the door), had mothers hold their children extra tight when my name’s said out loud at the bank. And you know: fuck you.

All those times we dehumanize. They make ghosts. Slices of you, disconnected from your heart. A way to survive all the ways a bunch of unthinking, white privileged assholes conflate you with some radicals. Radicals that wouldn’t even be there if they weren’t destroyingoureconomies. committinggenocide. shunningeveryonedifferent. makingghostsofourselves. And so, this playlist can be read two ways: a personal tale of recognizing/overcoming all the ways your past lingers in your face; and the subtle ways that society slices so many into a kaleidoscope of spectral pieces until they feel so disconnected that they snap. It’s about trying to forget. To move on. It’s a human look at the way emotional radicalism is created.by.us.everyday and the ways it’s pulled back by victims who are better than you.
