PURITY RING DJ SET

With killer FUNKTION-ONE sound and a growing share of the best EDM acts both local and international, Exchange nightclub has been positing itself as a mainstay in the Minneapolis Electronic Music Scene. Proof of this was apparent last Wednesday, when TC Presents hosted Edmonton synth-pop duo Purity Ring for a rare DJ set at the downtown dungeon venue. I’ve seen them a handful of times, and was super curious to see how a DJ Set would play out. Untethered by hefty stage equipment, the duo put on an eclectic set of remixes sprinkled with reworkings of original works. While Megan James (Vocalist) did occasionally contribute live vocals throughout the set, the focus for the evening was more on the sounds in the air than the people on stage. Although the average fan prefers a live set to a DJ set, I thought that the DJ Set format created a much different, more energetic crowd experience. Instead of having everyone crowding towards the front, there was a much more social energy; running into old friends, dancing with new ones, going to the bar for another drink without losing your “spot” upon return. It definitely wasn’t a live tour set, but if you go into the experience without those expectations, you might be surprised by how much fun you can have.
