When an artist as mysterious and talented as Zhu comes to your city, it becomes “the move” for the evening. Even if that evening falls on a Sunday before a long week of work. To provide a little background, Steven Zhu, better known by his stage name Zhu, has remained an anonymous artist and by doing this he asked his fans to be judged by his music alone. This method worked out in his favor because the tunes he was making were pure gold. In April 2014 he released his first EP titled The Nightday. The album was magic. His first single ever, titled Faded, was nominated for a Grammy. It wasn’t until after the Grammy nomination that he released his full name during an interview, Steven Zhu. But still, no one knows what he looks like.

I had my friend Colin McGuire, Founder of the trippy Electric Eyez glasses, be my eyes and ears at the show. Here is a quick ish review of the show:

“The show was held at Concord Music Hall, a place I am all too familiar with. But, the vibe once I arrived was one that I can’t say I have experienced there before. It was a very diverse crowd, everyone seemed equally as excited as I was. After all, Zhu is a new name, no one knows his face, and most people have never seen him perform live. Everyone anticipated a really unique show; And that’s what we got.

You could tell Zhu wanted to remain anonymous because the entire stage was blacked out, the fog machine was constantly running, and he had a large black hood on to hide his face. His two band members were also wearing the same outfits. You couldn’t see much. It all seemed so mysterious. Check out what I am talking about:

Pictures and videos were very hard to take with any clarity because it was literally so foggy you could barely see the stage. It seemed like the fog machines were running the entire time.

Here is another video showing how much fog they were using.

You can see from the video and pictures that the lightshow was awesome, but he was for sure trying to keep his identity under wraps.

He played all of his well-known tracks, an unreleased track, and pretty much everything from both of his awesome EP’s. I didn’t know what to expect with the length of his show considering he only plays his own tracks when he is performing live, and he doesn’t have many in existence. But he played out extended versions of his tracks and remixed them to play a full 90 min set. The guitarist and saxophone were incorporated into the show with all of the live song alterations and remixes. I didn’t think he would sing live on stage, but he sure did, and it sounded amazing. It’s hard to perform vocals live to sound as well as the studio version, but he nailed it.

The show was as unique as his music style and he maintained the mystery behind his identity. It definitely added to the experience and ambiance to the show. It was one of the best shows I have seen and for sure the best of 2016. Thanks for letting me share.

My best,

Mr. Electric Eyez
