As our resident dubstep expert, it’s in my blood to despise everything related to trap music. It’s not that I hate it, I just have an incredibly difficult time understanding it. However, when this OBESØN track came across my desk, I had to stop the presses and completely clear my schedule for the rest of the day. Leave it to a producer I’ve never heard of to make me eat my own words. In my defense, chill trap is a smaller subgenre that has really begun to blossom over an extremely short period of the time. Maybe it’s the fact that shrill synths don’t molest my ears mercilessly, or that hi-hats and 808’s aren’t insanely overused, but whatever the reasoning, OBESØN has left one hell of an impression on me with “Alone.”

The introduction opens with a beeping sound that resembles that of a submarine’s sonar system. That noise is quickly accompanied by what can only remind one of a large truck moving in reverse. As the build continues, some light percussion is carefully added into the mix before the song truly takes form. Manipulated vocal samples also play a vital role in this tune’s steady progression, without them, this track would feel like it was missing a crucial component. For anybody seeking a breather from the in-your-face bass madness that I typically share, this exquisite composition should have little trouble generating an entirely different musical atmosphere.
