Electronic producer Amp Live has been known for years as one of California’s most diverse and unconventional artists.

Having been a member of the hip-hop duo Zion I for nearly two decades, he gained attention through the release of dozens of albums, EPs, mixtapes, and more. In 2015, Amp Live split from Zumbi (Zion I) and made the decision to focus on his solo efforts.

Throughout Amp Live’s career, he has traversed a new frontier of electronic music – a frontier inhabited by urban pop beats, glitch-hop, and drum ‘n bass influences.

His unique and emotive dance beats have tickled the fancies of not just his listeners, but also fellow artists in the scene. Amp Live has produced beats for artists like Akon, Tokyo Police Club, MGMT, Linkin Park, Flipsyde, and has collaborated with power players including Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic) and Lorin Ashton (Bassnectar).

Amp Live’s latest concoction is his Divine Delay EP, which drops on Friday (2/23).

Among the handful of hot tracks off this EP, his newest single, “IAMHI” is a sweaty, energetic beat that is anything but monotonous. It eases you in slowly with its steady, almost hypnotic pattern, making you feel like you know what you’re getting yourself into. Yet within the first 30 seconds of the track, your brain is taken from pleasant lo-fi waters to a sudden tidal wave of trap. Mellow, melting vocals sewn with headbanging (what I am now calling) “trap-hip-pop” beats makes “IAMHI” a complex track. Filled with a number of peaks and valleys, it is tantalizing song that keeps the body guessing.

For an artist who proudly promotes “creating your own universe,” Amp Live certainly creates music that embodies this sentiment. “IAMHI” is just one sneak peek into what’s to come on Divine Delay EP, and we can’t wait to hear it.
