ONCE I WAS ALIVE

AND I COULD FEEL

I WAS HOLDING ONTO YOU

The War on Drugs has announced the release of its fourth LP and first record in three years, A Deeper Understanding, out later this fall. In conjunction with the announcement, the band’s shared a follow-up track to the April release of the 11-minute psychedelic paradise that is “Thinking of a Place” entitled “Holding On,” a pulsing ’80’s glow-rock jam reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A.

Moving past their signature melancholic and hazy classic rock sound with luxurious synths and ornate instrumentation on “Holding On” The War on Drugs sounds more as if the band’s moving on.

Now I’m heading down a different road,

Can we walk it side by side

Is an old memory just another way to say goodbye?

Adam Granduciel sings.

Perhaps the title of the latest record relates to the band’s deeper understanding of their sound, as “Thinking of a Place” and the latest “Holding On” are immensely introspective tunes.
