Portugal. The Man recorded this cover of Etta James‘ “I’d Rather Go Blind” over the summer on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, but it seems like a fitting tribute that they should release it this weekend. Soulful singer Etta James passed away last week at age 73. She sang such renowned songs as “At Last” and “All I Could Do Was Cry.”
“Her music defied category. I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always,” manager Lupe De Leon said in a statement, calling the singer “a true original who could sing it all.”
Rest in Peace, Etta.
