Oh zie steels themself, zie doesn’t give a fuck.  Stare down the abyss with an acerbic eye, cock an eyebrow. 1, 2, 3, Bang!: shoot and run.  That gun, that momentous, dynamic energy that reduces us to wanderers, was given to many of us early.  People leave. They abandon. They die. They say pretty things about family and then dehumanize you.  And so they give you this gun, and they teach you how to protect yourself; because they’re not going to.  And some of us squirrel away into holes, and some of us live it the fuck up.

In our own way,  naturally. We’re charming, we’re the charismatic lay that swells you with a surge of life, of hope. But we’re also  cunning, we can get out of any trap. And getting too close to us, feeling like you’re going to settle us down, civilize us: that’s imprisonment. Your love is a muzzle.  We live for the thrill. It’s the only thing we know to be true. Bang, Bang.

I abhor guns, but I love songs about gun metaphors/ war.   Because that’s what life is: a series of explosive, life changing moments, and a conquest to claim parts of yourself back.  And this is a rapturously good track by Josef Salvat. It’s rapacious and uplifting in that way that only dark souls get. You know, the kinds that find dark pop lifeblood when it’s pumping through your headphones.  And Salvat’s music is some of my absolute favorite. “Hustler” and “This Life” were my two favorite tracks of all of last year, placing #1 on my Top 20 Countdown; and I’ve incorporated his ‘bastard face’ into my self-deprecating lexicon from “Every Night”.
