I swoon for songs about shifting seas–change, if you will.  And that’s because the older I get, I no longer believe that change is a constant, like a motherfucking law of intrapersonal physics. Instead, I think stasis, the comfortably rooted life, feeds us naturally. When I decided to leave America  for a wandering future I got shouty protest every which way. Not from people who cared about my safety or would miss me (who misses an acerbic asshole like me?), but from deep seated anger that swiped at me like lion claws, hissing that everything I was doing was ‘ludicrous’.  I think we value change, in principle, but want to spitroast it on our BBQs every time we see it.

But that’s because change is brutal; and while We Have Band’s ‘Modulate’ gets it, The Penelope’s remix perfects it.  This remix pounds with the little synthy heartbeats of faux courage that are the lifeblood of any person who swings nude from the precipice of mass danger. The dancey arrangement swims amidst taut lyrics crying for ‘cooling one’s head space’  and for someone to ‘comfort [him]’, but it never gets caught up in them. Instead, what makes The Penelope’s remix great is the way it realizes below all that bubbling tension are moments of exhalation when the ability to ‘modulate’ your life to ‘live for today’ is the greatest fucking feeling. Bruises and all.
