Polica have always been a band about sex. But mostly of the ramifications, the righteous simpering feelings after the whimpering , and the loneliness of a tête-à-tête. Still, this is different. ‘Raw Exit’ sails on the power of its explosive, percussive synth and intrinsically strong, staccato vocals.  Everything about this song feels like a double entendre on the classy side, with the messy, entry point of fucking serving as darkly haphazard, emotional rebirth as well bite your lip sensuality.

Knowing this song comes as part of the deluxe package to album of last year, Shulamith,  only amplifies the tragic herewith. It makes sense as prologue for the self-searching that would populate Shulamith’s tracklist, but it also serves as a powerful antidote to Polica’s biggest critics. Negative critiques of the band thrown randomly at a wall, you’re most likely to find that people find Channy Leaneagh cursed with that perennially, banal favorite: ‘Is she ever capable of being happy?’ Which doesn’t occur to me, because, you know, there’s so much life in darkness and all.

But ‘Raw Exit’ becomes ever the more precious when you realize your holding in your ears a crystallization of a moment of hope, of pure, raw animal lust translating into sweet love; but you know, it’s all about to slide to shit soon. And the awkwardness of that moment makes Polica’s sex feel lucid.
