[ELECTRONIC] Submotion Orchestra - "Alium" Album Review

With everything they’ve touched proving hugely successful, the news that Submotion Orchestra were to release a third album this year was incredibly well received. Unsurprisingly, the seven-piece have gone above and beyond what was expected of them, and Alium is one of the most stunning collections of electronic music we’ve heard in quite some time.

Released today on the sister label of Ninja Tune, Counter Records, this twelve track LP is brimming with class, passion and warmth. Opening in driving, bass-driven style with “Awakening”, vocalist Ruby Wood’s debut appearance on “Time Will Wait” will take you away to somewhere distant and dreamy. The charming “Lust” is enveloped in atmosphere, as is the haunting “Swan Song”, where Wood really comes into her own once more. “Chrome Units” provides a glitchy moment of respite, before tracks such as “Life After” and “Worries” continue in the richly layered tone of much of the LP.

This UK group has come to life in the last few years, and it’s hard to find another live hybrid bass act that exudes such collective and individual talent. “Alium” is an evergreen album, and whilst it is ideal for repeat listens, we strongly suggest you try and get to see Submotion Orchestra live in the near future for a full experience. You can purchase the LP here.
