I can never forget that moment at Electric Forest 2014 when I came across Late Night Radio (aka Alex Medellin) for the first time. It was hot and packed at the Observatory Stage, yet somehow everyone found the room to dance incessantly to the electro-soul beats that were pouring into our ears. By the end our opinions were unanimous: This guy has talent, and this will certainly not be the last we hear from him.
Fast forward a few months later, we see Late Night Radio expanding his presence well past the Colorado music scene—touring with Lettuce, performing at multiple festivals, and now, releasing his new EP Polaroid on Michael Menert’s ‘ Super Best Records.’
Polaroid, which is now available for free download via SoundCloud, closely aligns with Medellin’s mantra, “emotion over energy.” Though each song is bursting with kinetic potential, it doesn’t explode into a fury of melodies or fast paced beats. Instead, every song retains a soulful, organic flow that is gently maintained by his use of vintage samples.
“I get off of tour and still have all the energy from playing shows and the places that I’ve experienced. I take that into the studio and feed off of it, and thats really what inspired this album.” -LNR
