I first came upon Rubblebucket over two years ago, with their breakout hit ‘Came Out Of A Lady”. Hopped up on substances that turn you swirly and make colors in the sky into spinning pinwheels, my friends and I decided to make a fan video, simulating the band’s, well, suggestive, visual euphemisms. Sticking our heads through multi-colored labia like latex led me to exclaim “Oye, I’m so glad I don’t ever touch vaginas” and then, since none of us knew how to splice video at the time, we had to let the project languish.

Rubblebucket’s music is so fucking catchy, it got a gold star gay man to stick his head through a metaphorical vaginal cavity. So, I mean, I learned quickly not to deny their power. And neither have others, case in point both Geographer and Little Daylight caressing “(Focus) Oversaturated” and “The Flower Man”, respectively. I like to think of bands in conversation with each other as more evocative of who they are as musicians than their solo tracks, and all of Rubblebucket’s work and remix associations since “Came Out of A Lady” say they land bright, killer, emotional hooks that play like semicolons (always in motion, never finished)–much like Geographer and Little Daylight themselves.

That’s especially true on new track, “Save Charlie”, a song about forcing a love interest out of their artificial reality lull into the swimmingly, funktastic heightened experience of ‘telling someone how they really feel’. Annakalmia Traver’s voice is fucking fantastic here, carrying the bridge like a siren call that only the most destroyed of heart could deny. The band’s sound is so rich these days without losing any of that quirkiness of the old days. That plays poerfectly for “Save Charlie” as you’ll find yourself so lost and intrigued in the melodies, by track’s end you’ll have transitioned yourself from coldness, into Traver’s beckoning new atmosphere…..
