June sent us a monsoon of tracks that flooded our spindly hearts and sent our ears awash in a torrent of massively awesome melodies. We just came off two weeks where some of the best music all year was subsequently released day after fucking day. Best two weeks that I can ever remember, in fact. So, I decided to pull up stops a little early this month–just in case July is a bit of a drought and the rest of June still coasts, par excellence.

“Taking On Your Hero” gets its inspiration from the Wildcat! Wildcat! track, “Hero” and inverts the traditional storyline of a hero swooping in to save the day and send us shooting over clouds and the legacies of battlefields to some distant, greater future. Sometimes our ‘heroes’, or those who want to be, are just as fucked up as we are. And that can lead us into worse straits than we already are. Still, I’ve never seen a list that humanizes the soon to be anti-hero to our lives. Just because they’re 57 shades of cray, doesn’t mean there wasn’t a complex set of interactions and emotionality that proceeded your need to dig your life out of the dirt that they spectacularly crash landed you into it.  In turn, “Taking On Your Hero” tgives a human face to someone most music would blindly label ‘villain’ while being fiercely anthemic in a way that feels supremely earned.
