Thank god Phèdre is back. Now, I can finally take “In Decay” out of my rotation. Will that abate all those cannibalism fetish rumours my obsession with that video garnered me?  Probably not, but let the easily abashed  eat cake…or a frittered bone for that matter. Phèdre makes me feel less alone in the world about my bizarro uniqueness, with music that is the perfect outlet for lascivious filth and throwing shade at the heart as it limps to the bedroom (two avenues of emotion I let myself stroll down).

Dabbling around the edges of When Saints Go Machine territory, their new single, “Ancient Nouveau”, moils through inner turmoil, allowing yelps of panic to bubble out momentarily before the production suffocates them back down. The concept of old and new are palpable in the meaty musicianship, with a driving synth beat and sanguine vocals on the chorus (NOUVEAU) constantly tempered by the song’s dark undertone and mollified stanzas (ANCIENT). True to life in that moment when old illusions loiter past their heyday, but you haven’t found where else to run to yet to dodge the smell of life rot, “Ancient Nouveau” keeps its inner eye focused toward a nebulous future (one I appreciate Phèdre finds no need to define).
