Review: BLV’s Playful “Sexplanations” Featuring Jay Novus
The cleverly-titled “Sexplanations” immediately strikes listeners with a downtempo, sensual, nostalgic vibe accentuated by its hip-hop-influenced beat and synthesized bass lines. Belgium’s Jay Novus provides playful, and soulful lyricism that paints familiar pictures of a back-and-forth relationship, with the narrator trying to overcome his ego and communicate his feelings to the one he loves. I found BLV’s upbeat pop-based melodies and progressions infectious and memorable. Quickly gaining recognition in the French electro scene, BLV has already gained substantial attention on SoundCloud with his catchy remixes of noteworthy artists such as Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, and 2Pac. In 2018, BLV released numerous acclaimed singles such as “Badunkadunk,” which racked up a towering 13M plays on YouTube alone. “Sexplanations” is the perfect song for a fun night out on the town.
BLV had this to say in reference to his new release, “Contrary to what could be thought, I wrote ‘Sexplanations’ with my singer Jay Novus in Los Angeles on a rainy day; it was the only day it rained there. Despite that, we were so happy and in a summery mood, that we wanted to give our track this Hip-Hop happy feel, with funky 80’s vibes. By mixing those two styles and my electronic roots, the idea was to get a song which could cross generations and please people from different music styles.
