What’s initially remarkable about this song–and it’s tragic that I even have to mention this, but get ready for a classic “Kavit Throwing the Hammer Down” moment—but APSPDR+ didn’t feel the need to alter the song’s gender narrative, and sang it with such sincerity regardless that you really feel it in your loins. I’m contemptuous of musicians who feel the need to butch up tracks lest anyone question or  have a moment of doubt about where they like to stick their dick. And that’s what they’re doing, whether its purposefully stated or not; and that’s a product of  living in a super homophobic society.

Sometimes they have to wholly add it in, as The Golden Boy did on their remix of Crystal Fighters “LA Calling”. I’m listening to the track and suddenly a repetitive ‘I’m thinking about you girl’ comes onto the track. Taken aback–because no way would Crystal Fighters ever use a line as banal as that–I check the lyrics again only to see that, yes, of course they wouldn’t: The Golden Boy just decided to ruin a beautiful, gender neutral song with their heterosexuality (aren’t there thousands of tracks released each year for you to do that to?). Congrats, that song is one of my favorites of the year, and you fucked it.   Believe it or not, musicians, all of us queer music lovers aren’t out there poring over every track going ‘OMG, dudes, did you hear that? He said ‘him’ instead of ‘her’, warm up the presses and let’s get this out there…”[X artist] wants to suck cock!”. Fuck you very much.

So, I don’t want to take up all of APSPDR+’s review with this topic, but its important to me; and its where the cover gets a good deal of its power. APSPDR+ is clearly an intellectual man—his Soundcloud bio is one of the most enjoyably brainy things I’ve read in some time–so, it at least crossed his mind  how it’d come across.  And it didn’t matter to him. And that ability to not give a shit, when so many people do, gives the song its alchemy.

Because this cover is sexy. Like melt your boxers off, straight to post orgasmic bliss hotness. There’s a lot of versions of this song–and with good reason, as despite being a Swift track the song has got some good bones–and APSPDR+ slinks in both the spaces of coiled, post-coital legs and the loneliness of one’s mind in the aftermath. It’s bravely produced, letting the emotion bubble to the surface in ways that would never have been present if we were all distracted about APSPDR+ caring about if we think he swings my way.
