The New York-based indie outfit Widowspeak is releasing a new record titled, Expect the Best, August 25 via Captured Tracks.

Just this June the band shared a video for its first single, “Dog.” Speaking with NPR on the song, frontwoman Molly Hamilton explained it as,  “the compulsion to move on from things and places, even people, when you’re not necessarily ready to. Sometimes, I get caught up in ‘the grass is always greener’ mentalities, or cling to an idea that ‘I’d be happy if…’ and then make a drastic change. Then, inevitably, I feel restless a few months later and it starts again.”

She continued, “It also addresses how I look at social media, I think it will help me feel connected to people I used to see more, but I end up feeling lonelier, like I’m missing out on a sense of contentedness that comes with staying put or at least committing to a particular direction. So it’s not literally about my dog so much as the way a dog might think about its home — not overthinking the next move, geographic or mental.”

Recently, August 4, the band shared another new song off the forthcoming album. A shoegaze influenced psych-rock track entitled “When I Tried,” wherein frontwoman Molly Hamilton echoes Hope Sandoval-reminiscent vocals, evidently drawing on Mazzy Star’s sound across the track.

A press release on the group’s sound moving forward read,

“Sonically, they exist somewhere in the overlap between somber indie rock, dream pop, slow-core, and their own invented genre, ‘cowboy grunge.”

Expect the Best is the band’s follow-up album to 2015’s All Yours out August 25 via Captured Tracks. Listen to the latest single “When I Tried,” or check out tour dates and more below.
