This is music to stay afloat to, treading concrete by way of weak legs that drift you into lamposts mistaken for a flame of yours; or tripping across streets teeming with traffic, forgetting the aimless wander is suicidal when everyone else is zooming along the path. That’s what this track is: the soundtrack to the gallop in your gait. ‘Haunted’ uses hi-hats to orchestrate the feet on a meek march down the sidewalk. Because what matters to Boy In A Movie is that the mind can get stuck in a tree 3km back thataway, or sip the thoughts of a thundercloud without feeling like punctuality to your body is king or something.

‘Haunted’ is dissassociated sublimely that way. The percussion and vocals never meet; and whenever one takes the lead, the other fades away. Percussion here acts like intermittent reminders that there is a world outside our heads; and it angellically flitters into the track as if to say there are beautiful things that aren’t our thoughts.

And these thoughts–a reimagining of Beyonce’s ‘Haunted’–be dark, yo. Boy in a Movie keeps the melancholy and the cracked, iron spine confidence that was the core to Beyonce’s work while recognizing that ‘fuck these aren’t thoughts we want to take on full force’. So they hit their emotional mark and fade before they blow up your path and everything loses its way. Really brilliant production here, oye.
