That track that made a certain generation, and those who find it by heavy handed hinting in the direction (as Smiths fans hew towards). feel as though they belonged? Yeah, that’s ‘There is A Light That Never Goes Out’. By the title, you’d think it was some shallow anthem, but The Smiths were always too smart for that. Their songs rarely gave resolution, being sanctuaries in that way for the cholerics and the mercurial minds of the world. The kids that would go out at night and scream at the sky and then crawl into their car and make it home, only, yeah, only on the faint hope that things would stumble towards better weather some day.

There’s obviously a hundred remixes of this quintessential track, but RBTS WIN’s is one of my favorites. Dare I say it? Much to the consternation of Smiths fans everywhere: I like RBTS WIN’s vocal stylings better than Morrissey’s. Particularly the way the cadence of the re-imagined vocal rhythms punch the air in tandem with the beats, leaving a hole in the atmosphere for emotions to linger and your head to smack into long after they’ve passed. Morrissey’s performance is nostalgia king, and has an intoxicating listlessness, but RBTS WIN’s has a quiet desperation with a spirituous stormy core.  Suddenly, the emotionscapes of the track’s night feel as amped up as the new electronic arrangement; so much so that you’d worry for the person if that feeling of light, or as Morrissey would say “Hope”, being snuffed out by the weight of it all didn’t feel transcendentally familiar.
