Boil it down in the spoon. Remove those impurities; and inject it right in the neck.  Suddenly the headrush. the colors. the warm disassociation letting everything that matters float to the top. All the extraneous emotions float into a cavernous space you can’t find as you’re freefloating, letting the words bubble into your brain like air gusts leading you to where you need to be.  That’s Outrun’s remix for you, which improves on Seinabo Sey’s original (which had a tendency towards overworded stoccato rhythms) through reductivism and coupling it with soaring synths. Oddly, Galantis already did that to Sey’s track before the original came out, to the point that when I heard Sey’s version I swore to god she sampled Galantis. But Galantis’ ‘Friend (Hard Times)” was a driving anthem of friendship and a call to, you know, maybe not fuck up your life this time.  Also, whereas Galantis’ take pulled you closer into Sey’s vocals like a hand down from the clouds, in Outrun’s version the clouds and all the trust they engendered is dispersed into miniscule pieces. And you’re free floating, quietly regaling the remorse of a relationship where no one could ‘let the other in’.
