When it comes to electronic dance music in Switzerland, nobody is representing harder than international sensation Maurizio Colella, better known by his DJ name, EDX. Over the past few years, the EDM phenom has made a name for himself on a global scale, headlining some of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals to crowds in excess of 60,000. For EDX, it’s just another day in the office. Between a grueling tour schedule, playing shows, responding to media and producing music, EDX somehow finds time to also release a weekly mix titled ‘No Xcuses’ – a mix that The Sights and Sounds is presenting exclusively for you below!

Featuring brand new, unreleased music and world premieres from Christina Perri, R3hab, Tom Swoon & Lush & Simon, Calippo and many more (check out the full tracklist after the interview below), ‘No Xcuses’ Episode 157 is a high energy mix of hard hitting bass and big room house crafted for fans of EDM everywhere!

In addition to the 60-minutes of ear candy below, we had the opportunity to sit down and ask EDX a few questions about life, T-Rexes vs. sharks, and his Swiss reppin’ electronic group, Helvetic Nerds. We also have a chance for you to win a signed copy of EDX’s On The Edge Remix Album!

The Sights and Sounds: First off, how are you doing? How’s your day going?
EDX: I am doing very well today. I am in Zurich and it’s a beautiful pre-Spring day. Thank you for asking.

The Sights and Sounds: What’s keeping you busy these days?
EDX: I’ve been working on a lot of new beats in the studio. New music, new EDX remixes and my On The Edge – The Remixes album was released in the last few days and weeks. It’s an exciting time.

The Sights and Sounds: You are part of a group called the Helvetic Nerds, whose goal is to represent Swiss dance music. Can you tell us more about this project and how you rep Swiss Dance to the fullest?
EDX: Christian, my partner, and I kicked up this project a few years ago. There are so many musically well-educated and forward-thinking artists based in Switzerland that have no idea how to develop, market, promote or just release their music. So we wanted to offer a home for everyone who has that level of talent and help them explore their musical journey through our network. It’s already been running for a few years and a few very successful artist have grown from it. Today’s latest additions are Nora En Pure, Croatia Squad, and the younger kids Cedric Zeyenne and Hailing Jordan. Switzerland is really a big country for Electronic Music.

The Sights and Sounds: Fans always love to hear the smash hits in the clubs, but what kind of music do you love playing the most?
EDX: I love to play music that builds up a vibe and touches people. I love the deeper and melodic stuff a lot.

The Sights and Sounds: I’ve always imagined that standing on stage while 60,000+ people dance to your song has to be quite an experience. Can you put that feeling into words?
EDX: It’s always such a blessing with touching moments.

The Sights and Sounds: Electronic Dance Music has exploded over the last 5 years. Where do you see the industry and the music in 5 more years time?
EDX: I believe we are moving forward in cycles. Music will come, music will go. Same for some promoters and of course the audience. In the USA, I am sure that EDM will still develop into a mainstream audience, but it will also bring more specialized genres and deeper music to the world. Definitely 5 exciting years ahead.

The Sights and Sounds: What’s the most unexpected place you’ve traveled to? What’s the most inspiring?
EDX: I have traveled to so many places. I remember during one of my first shows in Russia, I went to a city far away from everywhere. The daytime during Winter was about 20 hours of sun.

The Sights and Sounds: If you could write yourself a letter today and have it delivered to yourself 3 years ago, what would you write?
EDX: Pretty solid question…. Dear Maurizio, it’s good to see that you are still surrounded by good people. Keep following your dreams and your music. And by the way, it’s time for a new hair cut. #NoXcuses

The Sights and Sounds: What’s in the pipeline for you? What big project can we expect next from EDX?
EDX: There will be two new remixes released in March – one for Christina Perri’s “Human” and a deep house remix for Calippo – and the follow up single to “Reckless Ardor” will be out in early April. Two additional tracks, one very progressive and happy, and another one that’s deeper will follow in May. Lots of music is coming. Maybe Cazzette’s remix for “Weapon” is due soon as well….
