Collaboration is defined as working with others to do a task and to achieve shared goals. With the advent of the internet, it’s clear that this seems to be happening more and more lately. It’s not that people weren’t working together or achieving shared successes before the internet, plenty of that happened I’m sure. These days it feels a lot more like a duty and responsibility to do do, not only because resources and people are more accessible, but because there seems to be a consensus within different artistic circles to make awesome shit. That’s right. Yes, there’s a hell of a lot more artists and musicians that exist today than any other period in history and while some have bigger audiences than others, it’s obvious and natural that in order for these artists to succeed in this new ecosystem that working together is far more important than being a lone wolf. I’ve been that lone wolf and it’s cold out there.

As simple as it may be, our culture, at times, is still very stuck on being independent, keeping to yourself, and doing things yourself. While I mostly disagree with that, I do see the strength in it, but at the end of the day, our world is becoming more and more reliant on us being open to share, whether that be rides, work spaces, parks, transportation options, etc. It will become harder and harder to succeed without sharing and without being open to the idea of working on art or solutions to bigger problems with other people. Now the tricky part is when you’re working with someone that challenges you instead of being like-minded. Sometimes is can create something even better and other times it results in fights where avoiding that artist all together is the only option left.

In the case of Towkio and his newest track, it’s clear that his collaborative drive here was with artists that were on the same page as him, both musically and lyrically. While he’s put out plenty of tracks independently, he has consistently worked with the same producers (A Billion Young, French Kiwi Juice, Mojek, etc.), which means that he’s always been down to collab if the connection is on point. On “Involved” we’re treated to an upbeat, energetic track that fuses classic dance and disco elements with tight lyricism, clever wordplay, and a heavy beat paired with a fat bass synth. With additional verses from Vic Mensa, it’s clear that Towkio wanted to include his fellow Chicago rapper on the track. Smart move, indeed. Add to that the insanely catchy production from Kaytranada (who hangs with Rick Rubin now, no big deal). This single gets me really excited for the future of hip-hop and the direction it’s going. The pairing of the electronic beat scene with the hip-hop world can only create great sounding music, well…that is if the collaboration is right. Stream the track below and be sure to keep an eye out for all of these dudes.
