Foster-The-People-TheFly

All I wanted was a little intimacy. Not for me, god, definitely not for me; but from Foster The People’s Supermodel era.  Torches lit a path in a pitch black time, with its more than surface level torch songs setting ablaze anxieties and an avid search for affection.  It melted walls I’d expertly constructed and let the love of all the sick people in my life pour through; because I was sick, too–having mutant growths march around my blood and chomp on my lymph nodes, that is. FTP’s willingness to stare down their music without pretension and a tender mind paid attention to the destructible in their life, like on ‘Waste’, busted me down and opened me up to things that rebuilt me in ways that I can never thank the band enough for.

But, Supermodel was much too focused on rock melodies that distanced instead of enveloped. And although I’ve covered the Wolf Saga remix of “Coming of Age’ as bringing back the fun, electronic elements of the band, it wasn’t until Moygaard’s take on ‘Best Friend’ that the intimacy returned.

Under Glasgow based electronic/ambient artist, Moygaard; ‘Best Friend’ feels like ‘Waste’ on steroids, three thousand times as devastatingly beautiful.  Who knew this song had so much power? Under the sparse piano/synth led production, you can feel all the moments of a troubled life meet the fire of a friendship: lonely, worried tears; laying on a bed during the comedown and nuzzling them; the moments of head shaking, arguing and pacing to force an admission of ‘I need to change’, and all the hopes that these words are the corner turned.  Stunning.
