[END OF YEAR] Drum N' Bass: It Will Melt Your Face - Best Of 2014

2014 has been a massive year for Drum n Bass around the world. A genre that’s been huge in the UK for years now has finally poked through the North American bubble and really started making a name for itself over here. Coming from a city that’s not heavily saturated with Drum n Bass shows, I tend to spend my time listening to podcasts and watching live streams from England to get my fix so naturally, most of my song selections come from that side of the Atlantic.
As 2015 commences, I just wanted to show appreciation for this wonderful site that allows me the creative freedom to write just about anything. The Sights and Sounds is a site that collectively contributes recognition to all spectrums of electronic music and doesn’t play favourites or have a musical snob attitude. With that being said here is my list of 10 of my favourite Drum n Bass songs from 2014.

10. Sigma – Nobody To Love

This is a no brainer. After starting as a bootleg remix of Kanye West’s Bound 2, it received such positive feedback that Sigma reworked it into an original. This song was enormous on the festival scene this year and continues it’s presence almost a year after it’s release.

9. Delta Heavy – Reborn

“To give it all, we’d have to be reborn”

This music video. That’s really all I want to say about this song. It’s the most invigorating and interesting piece of art I’ve seen this year and it complexes me more and more every time I see it. Here’s a behind the scenes video from the duo themselves showing the painstaking time it took to create such a masterpiece.

8. Andy C & Fiora – Heartbeat Loud (Andy C VIP)

Andy C never disappoints, and paired with a beautiful vocal from none other than Fiora, this was guaranteed to do well. This is an explosive track that absolutely kills on the dance floor. Heavy bass mixed with angelic vocals are always a 10/10 for me.

7. Crissy Criss – Create The Future

Getting a bit deeper and darker we have Crissy Criss. An absolute legend in this category, this song is typical Drum n Bass with a funky undertone so creepy it turns me on. After 14 years as a host on BBC Radio 1xtra, 2014 saw some budget cuts and the final show with Crissy Criss was aired.

6. Netsky vs Metrik – Can’t Speak (Ft. Stealth)

“I’m searching through all this destruction
For a way that our love can still function”

The first time I heard this song was at Netsky’s live performance in Vancouver, Canada. He played LIVE. It was fucking phenomenal. I’ve never been to such a real, honest and raw performance. Every element was perfect. Every scent, sound and soul seemed to be in complete unison the entire night filling the venue with the most synchronistic vibe I’ve ever experienced. I can’t wait for this album to come in 2015.

5. Eric Prydz – Liberate (Matrix and Futurebound Remix)

“Just close your eyes
And we can push them all away”

Anything that includes Eric Prydz’s name is a guarantee good time in my eyes. This remix gives the original a boost of energy and a swift skip in its step. Matrix and Futurebound had some massive remixes this year and continue to grow their sound into something so unique.

4. Gorgon City – Unmissable (Metrik Remix)

“The sun’s gonna shine for the last time
And I don’t want to miss it all”

The ominously dark tone this song has gives me an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction when listening. It’s that kind of darkness that sparks intuition; the kind of darkness that sparks inspiration. This song is perfect for creation. Writing, music making, painting, sculpting, whatever the hell you create, create to this.

3. Foxes – Holding Onto Heaven (Kove Remix)

“Cause you think nobody sees what you doing to me
I’m telling you guilt is in your eyes
I hate what you’ve done
What you’ve made me become”

We all know that feeling of holding onto something we deep down know we should be letting go of. This song encompasses that entire feeling of helplessness; that craving for the ability to make others change their mind, that feeling of being in control. When in reality, none of us are in control. We’re so insignificant it takes songs like this to remind me that. It reminds us that you can’t hold onto the things you love without suffocating them and killing whatever it is you loved about them in the first place. You must be whole, you must remain independent and you must let go.

2. Kove – Way We Are (174 mix)

“There’s something in your eyes
That makes me wanna love you
There’s something ‘bout your vibe”

This song has sex written all over it. Her voice with the beat causes this inconceivable emotional situation of forbiddance. Two glasses of wine in a dark room with the wrong person with this playing in the background; someone’s getting pregnant. This is one of two Kove songs on my list for Drum n Bass this year and I fully believe he is becoming a force to be reckoned with for 2015.

1. Tritonal – Anchor (Noisestorm Remix)

“When the waves
Are crashing against your heart
Winds blowing you out too far
No, you don’t have to row so hard
I’ll be your anchor”

The process when I hear a song that’s bound to stick with me: I hear it; I recognize it and I become addicted almost immediately. The playlist count jumps to 200 within a day and the song starts to weave itself into my memories, my daily life, my relationships and my goals. This song became part of me as soon as I heard the first 30 seconds. The metaphoric lyrics stick to different areas of my life and became a crutch for some of my most personal relationships not only with other people but also myself.
