Having just dropped a fantastic remix of Carmada‘s “Maybe” as a free download, Australian producer PhaseOne is firmly back on our radar. We spoke to him about making this rework, and other projects he has in the pipeline.

How did you come about remixing Carmada? Were you already a fan of their work?

We actually know each other from Sydney and we are on the same booking/MGMT agency. I was a fan of their work yes, even before they became Carmada they had their own solo projects which were quite catchy too.

Did you enjoy the creative process of making it?

Definitely! It came to me quite quick, after I worked a Drum & Bass remix for this track, it’s not my first time writing DnB but is definitely something that pushes my musical boundaries. A lot of my tracks involve crazy bass sounds and leads, so with this remix its almost stripped back to a more chordal based tune, with an almost “power chord” sounding bass in the drop.

Do you prefer the studio or behind the decks?

I love both, I think my heart lies with production because it’s where I started. I’ve been writing and producing music for most my life. But there is something about the thrill of playing live that you can’t beat also.

Where have you most enjoyed playing in 2015?

I’ve played some pretty interesting festivals this year, such as Hard Grime which was in an old, supposedly haunted gaol. Another was in New Zealand at a winery. I had some awesome club gigs Australia-wide too.

Do you have any more material dropping this summer?

I’m working on a second EP at the moment to be released later in the year. I’m trying to step up and make this one even bigger than the last EP. I’m excited about the collaborations and already have received an awesome response to a track set to be the opener for the EP, I tested it out recently at one of my gigs in Sydney.
