[CONCERTS/ELECTRO] Mayhem at The Mid – A-Trak and Gun Love

Last Friday I had the pleasure of seeing A-Trak and Gun Love for Mayhem at The Mid. This being my first show at The Mid, I had no idea what to expect. It was a cold and snowy night, so I was somewhat concerned about the turnout for the crowd. Thanks to our friends at The Mid, I was promptly escorted into the building and some heat. The coat check line was packed, which immediately made me feel better about the turnout.

After checking my coat, I started to wander towards the music. Not knowing where to go at first, I found myself upstairs. My first impression of The Mid was classy. I felt like it was the kind of place you go to throw down in your button up. After a quick scoping out of the place I went downstairs to check out the dance floor. As is customary at shows, I headed straight to the bar for a shot and a beer. The tab hurt, and those were the last drinks I bought.

The dance floor was full but decently maneuverable. I found a comfortable spot towards the front of the crowd and started to take in all the music. By the time I made it to the dance floor, Gun Love had already taken stage and the crowd was grooving. Being a local DJ I have never heard, I was real excited to see what he had. If one word described the feeling on the floor at the time, it’d be “bouncy.” The style was upbeat, bass heavy at times, and generally happy and fun.

I like to define different types of electronic music by the way you find yourself and others dancing. Sometimes you want to rage, circle it up, mean mug, and head bang with your crew. Other times you’re jumping up and down, throwing a hand up in the air, and smiles all around. This show just made me want to bounce, pump the floor, and shuffle. There was a funky, classy, modern disco feel to the night. I was also fortunate enough to bump into a really nice Asian cutie on the floor somewhere between the middle and end of Gun Love’s set. Shaaaawing.

Before that night I was somewhat unfamiliar with the headliner A-Trak, but I did a little research prior to the show and was very impressed. The list of awards and accomplishments for the artist is extensive. His performance last Friday at The Mid backed it up. It felt like A-Trak had the whole building’s full attention. He has such a unique sound. The mix of electro/house and hip-hop sounds had the whole house bouncing. A-Trak is extremely talented at the DJ table and his set had me dancing the entire time.

I left the show feeling quite satisfied. I had moderate expectations seeing an artist I was unfamiliar with at a venue I had never been to, but they were essentially blown away. The whole night was a blast. The Mid was a perfect match for A-Trak. A classy venue for a classy headliner.  Check out this break beat banger from Zinc and A-Trak below.
