[SYNTHPOP] SOHN - Bloodflows

Leave it to S O H N to turn a single release into a near literal experience. They of the wondrously ephemeral “The Wheel”, which spun death into a set of romantic regrets, take “Bloodflows” and transform each note into the beating of a waxing, recovering heart.

It seems, at first note, that the heart has stopped. The atmosphere is calm—so calm in fact that only the pitter and patter of a single synth breaks the silence. Is the heartbeat of life waning? Has the abscence of love turned the heart dysfunctional, flopping on the floor in a myocardial infarction? You can almost imagine the singer paralyzed on a sterile floor, grasping at an empty sky for a saviour not to come.

But as the song continues its like we get to listen to the blood start to peter out of the heart again, increasing its beat as it realizes that even without love, it must beat again or die. It’s a track of beautifully silent– not overwrought— heartbreak; and a wonderful addition to S O H N’s increasingly stellar oeuvre. Check out more at their Soundcloud.
