[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Big Gigantic Talks Pirate Ships and Plays Truth Or Dare With Us

Colorado-based duo Big Gigantic have almost single-handedly helped bring live-instrumentation electronic music to the masses. Now a breeding ground for massive talent such as GRiZ, The Floozies, Gramatik, and many more, the genre has exploded in recent years. But if you ask Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken, they will tell you that they “still have no idea what the fuck they are doing.” But improvising as you go along is the way of the artist, and it has has allowed the duo to be fluid with the changing times, adapting to the ever changing musical landscape. Having first caught them three years ago headlining Bonnaroo, I have since seen them live multiple times, the most recent being an evening headlining gig at Chicago’s Spring Awakening – and these two have constantly updated their sound and performance to be bigger, louder and more memorable than the last. And if their relentless touring schedule wasn’t enough, Big Gigantic are already talking about getting back in the studio to record more tracks in follow up to their recent album, The Night Is Young. These guys live a life on the grind, and we applaud them for it.

Recently, we had the chance to sit down and catch up with Dominic and Jeremy during the inaugural Mysteryland USA inside the Bethel Woods Center For The Arts, and grounds of the legendary Woodstock ’69. Sitting in front of a tribute to the infamous bus chronicled in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Big Gigantic chatted to us about performing on a pirate ship, talked a little music theory, and played a quick game of truth or dare. Oh, and did I mention their massive love for Chicago? Check it all out below.
