exclusive interview with Strange Talk - The Sights and Sounds

When it comes to music from Australia, the first things that come to mind are summery, synth-drenched vibes and driving, upbeat melodies. Perhaps it’s the almost year-round summer sun or the countless adventure possibilities available, but concepts of freedom, good times and friends abound from the country down under. One band that encapsulates these ideas in total is Australian synth-pop collective Strange Talk, who have just unveiled their debut album, Cast Away. Packed with breezy, indie-turned-electro vibes and shimmering synths, Strange Talk has captured a feeling of infinite youth with effortless cool. It’s a super-charged injection of feel good energy that emanates from four disparate musical backgrounds, each member contributing their unique melodic ingredients for an end result that is capturing the attention of a worldwide audience.

The Melbourne quartet, consisting of Gerard Sidhu, Stephen Docker, Travis Constable and Gillan Gregory first caught my attention with their 2010 soaring hit single “Climbing Walls.” Since then, Strange Talk has accrued an assortment of accolades and praises, and most recently had their single “Young Hearts” featured in Snapchat’s latest video update.

We had a chance to catch up with the group while they were on tour in Chicago with Blondefire and The Sounds. Stream our full interview below, as we hole up on a backstage staircase and chat about hotties in Australia, climbing random shit, and pay tribute to Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming To America’.

You can purchase Cast Away via iTunes here.
