As the EDM culture evolves sub-genres are being produced almost monthly and as these sub-genres keep sprouting up left and right there are plenty of artists to tackle and contribute to its evolution. What started out as a dubstep/riddim crew has now evolved into The Shinigami Crew and they’ve spread their name throughout the nation and even has a few members outside of the states. In a recent interview with the co-founders Austin Tate, known on-stage as REM, and Christian Knipps known as RYUK, I was able to dig deeper into not only who they are, but what Shinigami is all about.

Q: “So just to get this out of the way – how’d the name Shinigami come about?”

A: “Well, in Japanese the word Shini means Death and the word Gami means god, together the world means God’s Of Death. Personally I’m a huge anime fan along with a bunch of other guys in the crew and I discovered what Shinigamis where through such anime’s as Death Note, Bleach etc. We call ourselves death gods for the simple fact that from the start we’ve been out to take names and murder the scene, the live shows we throw, and anyone standing in our way of doing what we do!”

Q: “That’s fuckin’ rad, haha, could you guys compare your sound to anyone in the dub scene?”

A: “I find it really hard to narrow that down. Everyone in our crew is so diverse and most crews out there are “riddim crews” I think we are more than that. So many of our artists have such unique sound all the way from deep medi to riddim to brostep and just dubstep all around. Lo Fi hip hop beats to chill and trap ambient and trippy.. It doesn’t matter what it is, we can do it!!! As far as who are biggest influences are you’d probably have to ask us all individually on that because we are all so different, and that’s the best part in my opinion.”

Q: “How many members are a part of Shini Gang?”

A: “We have exactly 20 members to start off 2017. The newest additions are Gloom Trench & DESTEEZ.”

Q: “Are you guys signed to any label currently?”

A: “Nope, we are independent and definitely trying to stay that way for now unless a huge opportunities comes our way.”

Founded in November of 2015 leaders Christian Knipps – RYUK & Austin Tate – REM both had aspirations of bringing some of the darkest and deepest wubs to the Denver dub scene; two years later they’ve brought together a dream team of talent that incorporates a vast number the many sub-genres that EDM has to offer. Shinigami has continued to stretch throughout the nation and raise eyebrows everywhere – keep your eyes peeled for the artists below because it’ll be sooner rather than later before you see them on lineups worldwide.
