Is #KuwaitStep the new indietronica scene to watch? Fuck, I hope so. I’m always for the breaking the hegemony of English language music, especially when it’s this good.   Recently I had a conversation with a friend who told me he’s had people seriously wonder if there is any good music produced outside the anglo-sphere; and at first I thought that was ridiculous, but then I’d had the same mind-gnawing chats. I’m like, has no one heard of Amadou and Mariam (and now Great Skin)? Looking at his discography, he could go many ways, but I hope he considers keeping up some Arabic samples in his songs. Great music is universal, and this track–which reminds of Bikini’s approach in ‘American Mourning’–swims in a bastion of synths that feel like rebirth. I’m sure you’ll see more of Great Skin in the future (outside his radio show). He’s caught the attention of DFA records and he remixed one of my favorite artists, Dan Bodan, so he’s on my radar.
