You can’t go back no matter how hard you try
It’s just a short time now until you die
[…]You just can’t close off anymore
You’ve grown cold
And you can’t start over, when you just got your feet off the ground

Fridays are usually arduously slow for music, but finding this track in my inbox today has turned my mind seismic. Like little earthquakes to the prefrontal cortex, when these lyrics land amidst vocalist Jane Void’s haunting stylings and the band’s glitchy, noise-pop synths, they feel like epicenters of destruction in your thought processes. Let them circle around in your head a few spins and they become upending shockwaves to the way you do business.

Which is not to say that this song delves into depression, on the contrary, in its delicate despair is a silver lining lacing each lyric. But that sense of hope isn’t from some luck swinging your way or an anthropomorphic saviour swooping in to knock your shit out of the way, it’s an internal realization. On “Understanding” your strength in the face of adversity ultimately means nothing, what’s left—what’s most important—is a willingness to not light the whole fucking affair on fire and start again.
